Very sad news for rugby today.

    Thursday, July 26, 2007, 4:12 PM [General]

A man who died alongside his son as they cleared up flood damage at their local rugby club was described as a "lynchpin" of the community who lived for the sport.

Bram and Chris Lane were among a dozen people who ventured through the filthy water flooding Tewkesbury RFC to assess the damage on Wednesday night.

When everyone else went home, the pair decided to carry on pumping water from the cellar of Mr Lane senior's beloved club which lies next to the town's ancient abbey.

But something went terribly wrong and on Thursday morning their bodies were discovered by the emergency services after the alarm was raised.

It was not immediately clear whether they had been overcome by the fumes of the petrol-powered pump they were using or electrocuted as they worked.
